The root of education is bitter, but sweet are its fruits. - Isocrates

ENCOMIUM: Isocrates was a teacher, a learner, and above all, he sought out knowledge. He praised it, as we praise food, or water, and as such, it is fitting to think this quote is deserving of such a man.
PARAPHRASE OF SAYING: Education may seem as though it is a waste of time, money, and effort for you when you are starting out, but once you graduate, and reap the hypothetical fruits of your labor, it is well worth it.
CAUSE OR REASON FOR SAYING: Without knowledge, the world would crumble, and without the use of what you as a student have cultivated being here, it would be pointless.
A CONTRAST: A student who knows how to read and doesn't has no advantage over those who cannot read. This too, can be applied to Isocrates quote of knowledge's labor.
A COMPARISON: As farmers need to take long periods of time to grow their crops into a harvest, so too, do students need to fine tune their minds into wonderful flourishing plants.
AN EXAMPLE: A newly graduated college student gets hired over a newly graduated high school student. This is because they show ethic in their work, their mind, and dedicate themselves to the betterment of their life.
TESTIMONY: I have seen the darkness that academia can bring, with long nights, disappointment, and egregious work that seems to get me nowhere except the in the teacher's favor, but without any of those things, I would be unable to progress in what will eventually benefit me in my life.
EPILOGUE: We can only see so far because we are standing on the shoulders of giants. This is one of the foundations of academic research, technologies, and inspirations every day, inside and outside the classroom.

  1. This was awesome, Josh! I loved the language you used. It would've been so easy to just use simplistic language and detail but the words you used really amplified it and convinced me, as a reader, that those words are truth.

  2. Nice job!! you amplified this very well. You example was well put with a college grad over a high school grad.

  4. Thanks for the comments guys. I appreciate the feedback, but I think I should have had something to utilize the web base of this blog. Maybe a hyper link to a video for a comparison.

    All the same,

  5. I like everything that you said and agree. I think that if you work hard at anything, not only school and education, you'll have been benefits. Education IS a pain in the ass (lol) but like you said, once you get through all of the rough patches and ups and downs of academia, it does pay off. This is very well done and I like your style and the way you say things.

  6. I like the quote too and I also did a blog on it. First of all, you had great imagery. The farmers and there crops, the students and there applications to the work force, and your testimony about education. I too think of times where school is overwhelming and sometimes I quit having motivation. But I see where I am now and I know there is more to go. Your epilogue is motivating and over all I agree with your blog!
