Ch 3-Rhetorical Ex. 2. Pg 116

Assertion to be confirmed: Sentencing prisoners to death is a fair and just action by the united states government.
Encomium: The government makes decisions based on emotional appeal, on an 'eye for an eye' basis.
Exposition of the situation: It is legal to sentence prisoners to lethal injection ensuring the maximum punishment for their crimes. 32 states presently enact capital punishment.
Certainty: With criminals constantly pushing the borders of society, and becoming more cruel, and vindictive with their crimes, we should have something that should deter them.
Credibility: The majority of the Continental united states have accepted capital punishment in the form of the death sentence.
Possibility: It is quite possible that some people that were sentenced to the death sentence were actually innocent. Without adequate time for the defendant to appeal his case, he could be wrongly convicted.
Consistency: A sentence can be commuted at any time.
Propriety: Because of this, it can be stated that any sentence can be refuted given the proper evidence.
Convenience: This can save the govenment a lot of room in prisons, as well as the taxpayers money.

  2. Good choice for a topic! To save my life I couldn't come up with one, so I just choose one from the book. I really like that you used a topic that is not only historically relevant, but also hot today. Nice! :)

  3. Ahh the death penalty…Personally I think that actions and sometimes even inactions carry heavy consequences. In some instances it is quite necessary to establish the boundaries that society will extend to its deviants, hence the death penalty. I think that statistically speaking most people who oppose the death penalty have no reason not to. That is to say they do not comprehend the reasoning or logic behind the penalty. People who get the death penalty are, most often (some ARE innocent and that has been proven) very deserving of their fate and among many other things serve as a warning to others like them that they will pay for their maladies. Haha looking at the wording on that last one, I could switch to an anti penalty argument right about now…

  4. I have a good friend who works with a number of anti-death penalty groups. And while I agree with Mick, that many people who oppose the penalty lack concrete reasons too (like too may people on too many topics, in fact!), I have heard some extremely logical, statistically-sound, compelling arguments against it (that have nothing to do, FYI, with the alleged "innocence" of some of the accused and convicted). --DR.
